Banja Luka is the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the area of 1,238,91 km. It is locaded in
the center of the region called Bosanska Krajina with the
population 199,191.
Banja Luka and the surrounding area is a place where numerous artifacts were found and testify of the Roman presence in this locality. The Kastel Fortress was raised by the Romans at the beginning of the new era. It is encircled by the stone walls due to the fact it served as a military fortress in the past. Archeological findings include many items such as coins and tools used by the Romans. The fortress on left river bank (Vrbas) is an historical core of the city as well as the framework of urban development. The ramparts are consisted of nine bastions and two gates. There are many institutions of culture in the town such as Banski dvor, National Theater, Children’s Theater, RS Museum, Museum of Contemporary Arts, National and University Library, and many cinemas. Numerous
cultural manifestations take place in Banja Luka. Only in
May there are three festivals that take place: Children’s
Saint George’s Day Musical Festival, Theater Fest and
the International Children’s Theater Festival. The town
is visited by artists from Europe and the entire world in
this period. The traditional manifestation called Banja
Luka Summer Games vivifies the fortress of Kastel during
summer. There has been a recent revival of eco-tourism
activities in and around Banja Luka. Most of the activities
centre around the Vrbas river (see the separate section)
