This most beautiful city in Herzegovina has been proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site for it’s Old Town and its Old Bridge, the most famous tourquoise-green Neretva River. Mostar is located in southern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is situated under mountains Velež, Hum and Čabulja, in the valley of Neretva river. To get to Mostar you need Two-hour drive from Sarajevo and it is 60 km away from Adriatic coast. It is the most important city in Herzegovina. The population is 113,169 people. It is believed that before Herzegovina fell to the Ottomans, the settlement of Mostar had only 19 houses with a small suspension bridge that united both banks. The men that guarded this bridge were called mostari (bridge keepers) and it is presumed that the town is named after them. The Old Bridge rising above the river Neretva was built around 1556 and was destroyed during the most recent war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Fortunately, the world recognized the cultural and historical significance of the Old Bridge and decided to put an effort into rebuilding it. Owing to that, the traditional competition of jumping off the Bridge into the cold, turquoise Neretva is still alive, luring visitors from all over the world to come and see or if they’re brave enough to try their skills. Here, in the heart of the city every day, people from all over the globe meet and admire the art and skill of Turkish architecture, enjoying the charm of ancient buildings along interewoven streets. Get to know the city by visiting lively cafes and peaceful galleries. Find yourself a quiet spot in the yards of old mosques, go under the bridge to see famous jumpers, who maintain this tradition for decades by preforming daring jumps from the 25.m - high bridge. Perhaps you will be lucky enough to come to Mostar during the many music festivals: the Summer Festival with traditional dances, music, games, traditional costumes, home cuisine and wine, or Bridge Jumper Fesival, where young jumpers from all over the world, eager from admiration, show their skills.
